File Association is the utility in windows that keep records that which file extension is ssociated with which program.
You can check file association in Windows7 by going Control Panel > Default Programs and click on 'Associate a file type or protocol with a specific program'.
In windows7 you can check and change file association but can not remove it from control panel, but here is another way to remove it by going in command prompt.
1. Open Command Prompt (Run > cmd )

1. Open Command Prompt (Run > cmd )
2. type 'assoc .rar' (without quotes) this will shows associated program.
3. type 'assoc .rar=' which removes association. To associate again go through and associate.
Note :
In WindowsXP you can do it simply without cmd. Open Control
Panel, select folder option. In a new window click on 'File Types' tab.
